Election of New Officers

Election of new officers is required by our Bylaws at the first meeting in March. Lance will name a nominating committee. Be prepared to say yes when asked to serve your carving club, or better yet, volunteer to run for an office. All our work gets done by our own members who willingly serve.

Weekend Workshop

The 2006 weekend workshop February 17-19 with a guest instructor features Tony Erickson with his whimsical houses in cottonwood bark. No special skills are required for this workshop, just a sharp knife and imagination.

The workshop will take place at the Florida Art Center and Gallery in Havana. Tentatively we will meet Friday night from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m. to about 3 p.m. We must have 8 people to hold the workshop, with no upper limit. If we have 12 or more carvers, the cost will be $100 per person. A number less than 12 will result in a $10 increase for each student we are short. The cost of the first piece of cottonwood bark is included in the fee. Additional pieces of bark will be available for you to purchase from Tony at an additional cost.

Sign-ups will begin on Jan. 9. The fee is due no later than Feb. 13, but can be turned in earlier. Bob Whitworth will give additional details at the Jan. 9 meeting. Barbara has carved a whimsical house with Tony and will bring it to that meeting. Barbara's testimonial: "This is one of the most fun and creative carvings I have done in a long time! Well worth the price of the workshop."

Instructional Series in
Carving Faces

The three program nights in February, March, and April will present techniques for carving animal and human faces. Barbara will give each member a block of basswood to carve along with the instruction and to practice the techniques. She will also have a handout each night on carving the feature being taught. There will be more practice and comment than lecture. This is highly participatory instruction. You should end up with examples to keep.

After the shaping of the head is done, carving a human face usually starts with the nose, procedes to the eyes, then the mouth. The features will be taught in that order. Animal faces are a little different, but we will cover the same features as the human face each night. Come ready to participate and practice.
