Program Notes

Sept. 18 - Eight Pointed Star (Intersecting Triangles). To carve this project, you will need a sharp knife, a six- or twelve-inch ruler, and a pencil. Cutouts (2 inch cubes) are $1 each.
Oct. 7 - Catch Up Day. Obtain assistance from instructors with your unfinished carvings! Look for us in a picnic shelter at Lake Ella starting at 9 a.m. Intended to help you reduce your stack of unfinished carvings. Optional activity.
Oct. 16 - Gourd Art. Linda Rabon is a gourd artist from Havana who paints, carves and woodburns gourds. She will talk about everything from obtaining to cleaning to finishing gourds. She will also demonstrate her techniques and the many uses of gourds. Don't miss this program.

North Florida Fair

Members are encouraged to enter a carving or two in the North Florida Fair Fine Arts & Crafts Show. The Fair will take place November 2 thru 12.

There is no class specifically for woodcarving. Our work could fit into Class 12: Woodcrafts or Class 17: Sculpture-Other. You will have to decide which class best suits the item you are entering. There are no entry fees. Entries must be hand-delivered to Fairgrounds Building #2 on Friday, Oct. 27 between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., or Saturday, Oct. 28 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Entries can be picked up Monday, Nov. 13 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

There are two divisions to the competition: amateur and professional (someone who produces carvings for sale.) There are four ribbons with cash prizes available in each class and division, and no artist will be awarded more than one ribbon. That means eight ribbons are available if members enter.

If you have a computer and Internet capability, you can obtain the entry form and rules on-line. Go to www.northfloridafair.com. In the left menu bar of the home page, click on Annual Fair. Then open Premium Book. On the new page scroll down to Dept. 610-Fine Arts & Crafts. Click on rules to see the rules, and then on download entry form. If you do not have computer access, there will be copies of the rules and entry form at the meetings.

Pick or prepare a carving to enter. Last year these members were awarded ribbons: Robert Christian, Tana Grattet, Robert Hatch, Barbara Mann and Bob Whitworth. Several ribbons were not awarded because there were no entries. You can change that this year.

Club T-Shirts for Sale

We have a few of the blue T-shirts (no pocket) with the white logo for sale. The available shirts are in larger sizes only: 2 XL and 1 XXL. They are $10 each. We also have knives ($14), gloves ($5), thumbguards (50 cents), and the 1.5, 3.0 and 4.5 mm Warren V-tools and gouges for about $6 each. Bring cash or a check.
