Santa Face Workshop February 8,9,10, 2008
This workshop will have something for everyone in the club! Read on!
Larry Nowell of Knoxville, TN will be our guest instructor for this Santa face relief carving workshop. The butternut cutout for the face is about 12" high, 8" wide, and 2" thick. Tom Norman will have a picture of a finished face and the cutout at the Sept. 10th meeting for you to view. The cost is $90 per student which includes the cutout. We must have a minimum of 8 students and the maximum is 15 (with Tom as a helper to Larry.)
On Friday night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Larry will hold a gouge
sharpening workshop. This is open to all club members at no
cost. The class members will be able to sharpen their tools
and be ready to work on the face on Saturday morning. The
Saturday and Sunday workshop, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., is limited to
those who sign up and pay for the workshop. All workshop
sessions will be held at the Light N Up Art Co-Op and Studios
classroom in Havana.
Sign ups for the workshop will begin at the September 10th meeting. A waiting list will be created if we go beyond 15 signees. The $90 fee (check made payable to Capital City Carvers) is due at the January 28, 2008 meeting. The club will give Larry one check that includes all the fees collected.
Larry will provide carving stands for the students. You need to provide dividers, pencil, and knife. Larry does allow students to use his tools, so you do not necessarily need to buy more tools. Larry recommends these tools: mallet and full size gouges 5-8 (read that #5 sweep, 8mm), 5-20, 7-10, 9-20, 11-3,11-5,11-10,12-4,12-10. He says the critical tools at the 5-20, 7-10, 11-3, 11-10, 12-4 and 12-10. You may have these in any size tools (full, medium or palm.) Compare your tools to the ones in the Woodcraft catalog. You may be able to convince Santa to bring you a couple of the critical tools you don't have, but not having them won't keep you out of the workshop.
Larry will have additional cutouts available for sale at $10 to $20 each.
This is our first workshop on relief carving. Larry has a good system he uses to assist students in carving the face. You will be pleased with the results!
Name Tags
Club members are expected to wear a name tag at all club meetings and events. It doesn't have to be fancy. You can obtain materials for making a name tag from Barbara at a meeting. The "name tag inspector" is authorized to collect a 25 cent fine if you are unidentifiable!

Sign Carving Workshop April 4, 5, 6, 2008
This workshop is also something new for the club. Bill and Isa Hastings of Black River, Michigan will provide the supplies and instructions for making signs. They will create a template for each carver of the name(s) for the sign. You can then add your own appliqué from their roughouts or an appliqué you create, or can woodburn something on the sign from your own pattern. Barbara will have a sample sign and representative pictures of finished signs at the Sept. 10th meeting.
This workshop requires 8 students minimum and will take up to 12 students maximum. The cost is $155 per student, which includes 2 sign panels ($32), a book ($10), 2 appliqués ($2 each), written instructions on finishing a sign and primer coat materials, and instruction ($109.) The provided scroll shape sign board is 10" X 16", and the oval or round sign board is about 10" in diameter. Additional appliqués can be purchased for $2 each. Additional sign boards can be purchased at 8" X10" for $10, and 10" X 12" for $12. All boards are aspen.
Students must have their own sharp tools (standard medium size gouge preferred.) A 1/4" #11 veiner will do most of the lettering. A board holder is desirable. The final protective coat on the sign will be done by the student at home. We will check with workshop participants in January to see if we need to put a group order together for the tools and make board holders. If you want to woodburn a decoration, you need to bring your own woodburner and pattern to the workshop.
This workshop will take place at the Light N Up Art Co-Op and Studios classroom in Havana. We will meet on Friday night from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 9a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sign ups for this workshop will take place at the Sept. 10th meeting. If more than 12 want to take this workshop we will hold a lottery and fill the slots by the numbers drawn. If you are not in the first 12, you will go on the waiting list in numerical order.
A payment of $75 per student is due by the October 22nd meeting. The club must send the instructors this money by the last week of October. The balance of $80 will be due by the March 24 meeting. The club will give the instructors one check for this fee at the time of the workshop.
The instructors will teach a process by which you can create signs on your own after the workshop. Designing and relief cutting will be wonderful skills to add to your carving expertise. Beginners can do this workshop easily. You can get creative with your signs by what you add to them. You will be very pleased with the finished signs.
