North Florida FairThe North Florida Fair will take place November 8 to 18, 2007. When a few of us entered carvings in the Fine Arts and Crafts division two years ago, there was no category for woodcarving. Each of the last two years members of our club have won Best of Show and everyone entering brought home ribbons. As a result, one of our goals has been accomplished. There is now a class designated for woodcarving! It includes hand tooled and machine turned artwork. Now is the time to get a carving ready to enter for this year and bring home your ribbon. You can access the rules and the entry form on-line. Go to www.northfloridafair.com, click on premium book, a page will "come up that will allow you to print out the rules and the entry form in Department 610 - Fine Arts & Crafts. If you do not use a computer, Adelle, our secretary, will have a copy of the rules and entry forms available at the meetings. Amateurs and professionals compete in different divisions. Ribbons and cash prizes are awarded in each class and division. There is no entry fee. Carvings must be delivered to Fairgrounds building #2 on Friday, Nov. 2, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., or Saturday, Nov. 3, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Be sure your carvings and entry form are delivered to the Fine Arts and Crafts table so they will be entered in the right department. Carvings can be picked up on Monday, Nov. 19, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Florida Woodcarvers RoundupThe Florida Woodcarvers Roundup is scheduled for March 26-30, 2008, at Hillsborough River State Park in Thonotosassa, FL. That's on US 301 about 12 miles north of Tampa and 7 miles south of Zephyrhills. The Roundup website will be updated and a registration form made available by December: www.geocities.com/podea_2000. Information now on the website indicates all instructors with the exception of Ol' Don Burghdorf are expected to return and several new instructors will be added. Advance registration for the entire Roundup will be $20 and there will be no raffles, no donations, and no hounding for money to pay for everything. Each registration gets 2 free tickets for the instructor friendship cane and the door prizes. You can attend the Roundup for a daily regisration fee of $5, but the tickets will cost an additional $2. Advance registration guarantees seats in the classes of your choice. The organizers are expecting many day trippers who must settle for whatever classes have open seats when they register that morning. Each instructor sets an instruction fee and costs for materials which is on the website. Reservations for park RV and tent sites are being taken now. Six motels have been identified in the Zephyrhiils area and are taking reservations. Visit the website for more information or talk with any of the club members who have attended previous Roundups. This is a great way to learn new things from new instructors at a very reasonable price. Our club had the only club display last year. |
Woodcarver in Quilt ShowThe 26th Annual Capital City Quilt Show, "Our Lives in Fabric," is on display Sept. 6 to Oct. 28 at the Main Gallery of the Museum of Florida History, 500 S. Bronough St. The hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mon.- Wed. and Friday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thurs.; 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sat.; and noon to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The show is free. The show features 100 hand-crafted quilts from the Tallahassee area. The preview featured some beautiful and creative quilting. What is unusual about this show is the special guest artist, Fraser Smith, a woodcarver. Smith carves quilts that hang and drape and look like the real thing. Pictures of his carving in the woodcarving magazines show his work as very detailed and absolutely as beautiful as the quilts. Go to www.gofraser.com is see his work. Take in the quilt show both for the quilts and the carving. More feasting for the eyes! Woodcarving Class at Light N UpClub member, instructor, and Co-Op artist Barbara Mann will be teaching a woodcarving class at the Light N Up Art Co-Op and Studios this fall. "Carve Your Own Christmas Ornaments" is intended for beginning and experienced carvers to create their own heirloom ornaments and carve a Santa figure. The small size of the class, about 8 people, means class members get lots of time with the instructor. "Carve Your Own Christmas Ornaments I" will take place on these Thursday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; Sept. 13 and 20, Oct. 4, 11, 18, and 25. Twenty different ornaments and an EZ Old World Santa figure will be available. Cost is $75 for the class and $1 to $3 for the cutouts used. New carvers without any equipment can purchase a knife, glove and thumbguard for $24. "Carve Your Own Christmas Ornaments II" will be held on these Thursday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.; Nov. 1, 8, 15, 29, and Dec. 6, 13. All sessions will be held in the classroom at the Co-Op Shop and Studios. Park in the big parking lot next to the building. Please register in advance. For more information and a registration form go on-line at www.lighnupartcoop.com. Mail the form with a check.
