Program Notes

October. Napkin Rings. Before washing machines and paper napkins came the cloth napkin for daily use. One kept the same napkin for a week and each family member's was distinguished by use of a unique napkin ring. We will carve these highly functional items in walnut or cherry in simple, geometric shapes that you may make fancier if you wish.

November. Santa Ornament. This a traditional flat ornament of Santa going down a chimney. This relatively simple pattern will make nice gifts for family members and friends. They will be in basswood and can be painted.

Demonstration Opportunities

We have been invited to do woodcarving demonstrations at two local events this fall. Everyone who can is invited to participate.

Art on the Bricks, October 11 in Thomasville. They will set up tables for us on the Courthouse Square lawn; chairs will be provided but you may want to bring your own comfortable chair. We must have our vehicles in the designated parking area and be set up by 9:30 a.m. The event runs until 4 p.m. but we are free to leave as things slow down, usually by 3 p.m. Bring a small carving display, a carving or two for demo purposes, and any carvings you want to sell. We will need commitments to attend before or at the Oct. 6 meeting.

Big Bend Farm Days, December 12 at the Museum of History and Natural Science, Tallahassee. We have been doing demonstrations there for years for the children. The Dec. 12 activities may be moved to Saturday, Dec. 13 if few schools sign up to attend. There are more adults and plenty of children on Saturday. We will need commitments to attend before or at the Dec. 8 meeting.

Senior Center Silent Auction

The Senior Center is holding a Silent Auction as a Foundation fundraiser. We have been asked if we wish to contribute items as a club or as individuals to assist in this effort. If you have a carving you wish to donate, bring it to the Sept. 8 meeting. Barbara will take donations to the Senior Center on Sept. 9, the deadline. Thank you!

Eagle Cane Project

We should be winding up our eagle head carvings for the cane project. If you need assistance or more information to finish your carving, ask at the next meeting. A big thanks to everyone who has participated!

Florida Roundup, 2009

This extraordinary learning event is scheduled for March 25 to 29 at Hillsborough River State Park. Plan to attend and put it on your calendar now.
