Bluebird Workshop at the Museum

Once or twice a year Barbara Mann teaches a beginning/intermediate carving workshop at the Tallahassee Museum of History and Natural Science. The subject on Jan. 24 is a bluebird which can be kept simple or carved in more detail. The cutout is in basswood and is suitable for painting.

Contact the Museum at 575-8684 and ask for the Education Office to sign up. The cost includes one cutout and is $28 for members and $30 for non-members. The workshop will begin 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. Barbara will offer continued bluebird assistance at the club meetings after the workshop.

Steve Brown Weekend Workshop

Steve is a nationally known woodcarver and instructor from Madisonville, KY. He was with us in 2000 for a similar workshop and we are glad to welcome him back. Steve has authored two woodcarving books, Carving Pen Figures and Carving Figural Kaleidoscopes, and won numerous awards for his carvings. A visit to his website, www.sbrownwoodcarving.com, will introduce you to his marvelous carvings. His painting of carvings ranks with the very best woodcarvers. The faces are terrific and this is a great opportunity to learn face carving from a master.

Roughouts are available for about 30 different caricatures including Santas, wizards, mountain men, and many other figures. They range in price from $8 to $28. Steve's kaleidoscope kits are original and a lot of fun. They include firemen, Santa, wizard, other figures and a lighthouse. They range in price from $35 to $60. We need to let Steve know in advance which roughouts you would like. He will bring extra roughouts, but if you want a kaleidoscope tell us now.

The workshop will take place Friday, Jan. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 31 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 1 from 9 a.m. to about 4 p.m. We will carve at Harold Lewis' business site, Lewis Digital, 630 Capital Circle NE. We will provide good written driving instructions for the attendees.

You must sign up in advance for the workshop. We have a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12 students. Space is still available. The cost is $150 for instruction. Please make a check payable to Capital City Carvers and bring to the Jan. 19th meeting. Attendees are responsible for paying Steve directly for all roughouts they use.
This workshop is a great opportunity to learn from an original and master carver. Sign up now.
