Holiday Party Special Event

Mike would like to do something new at our Holiday Party on Dec. 19th. Members are bringing home ribbons from various shows and competitions, yet we seldom get to see these carvings at one of our meetings. It's time for some sharing and recognition.

Each member who has been awarded a ribbon of any kind in any show or competition in 2016 should bring the carving(s) with ribbon(s) to the party for display. And if you have carvings and ribbons from previous years, bring those too if you wish.

This club has talent! We'll be sure to add another big table for that meeting!

Walt Earns a BIG Ribbon

Walt Kreitlow entered a whimsical bark house in the Westminster Oaks Communities statewide art competition earlier this year. Not only did he win a blue ribbon, but he also brought home Best of Show. Hurray Walt! We look forward to seeing the house again on Dec. 19th.

Pensacola Interstate Fair

We have already been contacted about entering carvings. Barbara said we would. The fair is Oct. 20 to 30. Go to www.pensacolafair.com. Click on exhibits, then on premium book, then on woodcarving. Scroll down for exhibit categories and rules. The limit on entries from one person is 3 per category. Barbara usually gets entry forms in advance of the fair and will distribute them to interested members. The completed forms must accompany the carvings.

The club finds a member who will take the carvings with entry forms to Pensacola on either Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2 to 8 p.m., or Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2 to 4 p.m. The carvings must be brought to the meeting on Monday night, Oct. 17 to be taken to Pensacola. The carvings must remain on display through the entire fair period. The club will arrange for a member to pick up the carvings and ribbons on Sunday, Oct, 30 at a prearranged time. They will be available for pick up at the club meeting on Monday, Oct. 31., after we ooh and aah over them.

North Florida Fair

The 2016 fair is Nov. 3 to 13. We have participated for many years with members bringing home ribbons and cash awards. The website is www.northfloridafair.com. Click on exhibitors, then departments. We are included in Department 610 — Open Arts and Crafts. Click on that and wood carving is under Class 6 — Sculpture. One person can enter only 2 carvings in the entire show and can be awarded only one ribbon with the exception of Best of Show.

You must enter either in the Amateur or Professional Division as they are judged separately. Reads the rules carefully for your correct classification. Barbara could not find the entry forms online and has asked about them. The information will be passed on to you.

The entries (take your own to the Fairgrounds, building 2) must be delivered either Friday, Oct. 28, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., or Saturday, Oct. 29, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. They can be picked up on Monday, Nov. 14, between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Obviously because of the overlap in dates, the same carvings cannot be entered in each show. You will need to pick and choose, but remember you can only enter 2 carvings for the North Florida Fair.

Museum Fall Farm Day

The 2016 Fall Farm Day is scheduled for Saturday, Nov 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We have been invited to participate and it will be discussed at an upcoming meeting. We demonstrate wood carving, put up a display, and talk with everyone. And the Museum feeds us lunch.

Carving Gloves Dirty?

Here's a hint from Mike: If your carving glove is dirty it can be washed in the machine. Just put the gloves and even thumb guards in the bottom of a laundry bag for delicates and throw it in the clothes washer. The bag will keep anything from getting lost and Mike says he finds things come out clean. You probably don't want to put them in the dryer.
