Wood Carving Shows in Florida

Each winter finds a concentration of wood carving shows in Florida. Attending one or more of these gives you the opportunity to see what other wood carvers are doing, view some very good carving, visit with other carvers, and have fun at vendor booths. Here's the new list. Car pool and try to get to one.

January 10-11: Punta Gorda. Florida Winter National Wood Arts Expo & Competition. Arguably the best and largest show in Florida with great carvings and great vendors. A must see. Charlotte Harbor Events & Conference Center. 9am - 4pm Saturday and Sunday. Admission charged.

January 17: Port Charlotte. Cultural Center Woodcarver Show. Cultural Center of Charlotte County 9am-3pm.

January 17-18: Seminole. Suncoast Wood Carvers' 20th Annual Show and Exhibition. Seminole Recreation Center, 9100 113th St. 10am-4pm Saturday and Sunday. $3 admission, free parking.

January 24: Sarasota: Gulf Coast Carvers Guild Woodcarving Show. 3100 Fruitville Rd. 9am-3pm Saturday & Sunday. $2 donation.

January 24: Melbourne. Space Coast Wood Carvers Show. Eau Gallie Civic Center, 1551 Highland Ave. 9am-3pm.

February 5-16: Tampa. Florida State Fair woodcarving competition. Florida State Fairgrounds.

February 7-8: Port St. Lucie. Treasure Coast Woodcarvers "Artistry in Wood". Polish American Club, 343 NW Prima Vista. 10am-4pm Saturday & Sunday. $5 admission.

February 14: Sebring. Highlands WoodcarversAnnual Woodcarving Show. Bert J. Harris Jr. Agricultural Center, 4905 George Blvd. 10am-4pm. $3 admission.

February 21: Arcadia. Peace River Show. Turner Agricultural Center.

February 28-March 1: Hudson. Calusa Wood Carvers Anual Show & Sale. Veterans Memorial Park. 10am-4pm Saturday; 10am-3pm Sunday. $3 admission.

March 1: Punta Gorda, Punta Gorda Annual Woodcarving Show. Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center, 75 Taylor St. 9am-4pm. Free admission and parking.

Knives and Supplies

As a woodcarving instructor Barbara has limited supplies for sale at club meetings. Including:

• Bud Murray wood carvings knives $20 each. Just received a new supply including detail knives. Strops $6.
• Dockyard Microtools — 1.5, 2, 3, 4, 5mm gouges; 1.5, 2mm V-tools; 75 degree V-tools. $12 each.
• Red Kevlar Gloves — Highest rated in cut resistance & abrasion in XS, S, L, XL $19.07 each.
• "Swiss Gold" sandpaper in 150, 180, 220, 320, 400 grits. 3x3 peice 25 cents. $2 bags assorted grits. Or a personalized bag just for you — tell me the grit and the number of pieces.
• Sanding Sticks for those small spaces, assorted grits, 20 cents each.
• Tape — Micropore Tape for taping up cuts $2. Green stick to itself tape for wrapping thumb guards $3.
• Stropping Compound-usually aluminum oxide-$2.
• Brass plated or zinc plated small eye screws for ornaments. $1 for bag of 10.
• Eyes for bird and animal carvings in black, brown, red, yellow, hazel; 3, 4, 5, 6 mm in most colors. $1 pair.
• Cutouts — ornaments, birds, animals, etc. usually in basswood. Cottonwood bark. Cypress knees. Prices vary.
